Taping in horses

Kinestiotape for horses has been developed from the more well -known taping concept for us people. Because of the many positive experiences with kinesiotape there, Taping was also started to apply to animals, such as horses, dogs and even cows!

Vetkintape is a kinesiotape, Specially developed for use on animals. For example, it has a better (animal -friendly) glue layer, because our horses and dogs have fur instead of our own (reasonably) smooth skin. This Ekstra glue layer is also the reason why you should not stick Vetkintape on yourself, but only on your (hairy) animals.

Taping can help your horse, among other things, by becoming more aware of a specific muscle or body part, but can also help mobilize joints, help to let go of tension in the body, or helping to correct posture and/or movement problems.

However, the elastic tape can also be applied to assistance with it:

  • promoting blood and lymph circulation
  • influence fascia and muscles
  • treating scars
  • Preventing or treating stable legs or swelling

How does taping work for horses?

For people, the tape works through the lifting effect that the tape has on the skin. Fascial structures are stimulated and the self -healing capacity of the body is activated, resulting in a faster healing of different ailments and injuries. Human therapists know that it is not nice to use tape over hairy skin, and therefore the skin is usually shaved smoothly before tapping.

However, Vetkintape has been specially developed for animals and therefore adheres well to a smooth (short) or shaved fur.  By applying the tape correctly, the fascial structures in the skin are influenced through the hair and it is therefore not necessary to shave your horse completely! However, the fur must be free of dust and fat. On a long fur or a curly coat, the tape will hardly stick and you will not get the most optimal results. So good preparation, before you stick is important!

Who uses taping?

There are a large number of professional therapists who use taping as a supplement to other treatments, but sometimes also as independent treatment. There are also many horse owners who Bet taping with their own horses. We think it is very important that you always first consult with your own DA and a professional therapist, before you get started. Together with them you can then make a treatment plan, which fits your horse and his or her problems.

More information about taping

Of course you must have some knowledge about the anatomy and biomechanics of the horse, to be able to make full use of taping. Fortunately there are some good books (we have for example one in our webshop), but there are also (online) courses that you can follow to obtain a good basic knowledge of taping. There are also possibilities for 'live' courses, where, with the help of more experienced tape users, you can learn more about the use of tape, technology and more background knowledge.

Would you like some options for courses or names of therapists who use taping?  Write us Then feel free to send a number of options.
