Rain and skin problems

With wet weather your horse is more likely to walk on 'dermatophilose' ... dermato what ??!

👉🏻 Dermatophilosis is a superficial inflammation of the skin, caused by dermatophilus Congolensis. This bacterium is easiest to horses with a weakened immune system that are constantly exposed to moist conditions, for example younger horses, sick horses and the oldies. But also healthy horses that get a lot of rain on their fur and cannot really dry up between the showers, are more likely to have this condition.

What can you do to help your horse?

  • Wash with disinfecting shampoo
  • Carefully remove all scabs
  • Protect and treat the spots with antibacterial ointment
  • Wash and disinfected all brushes and blankets to be sure

What can you do preventively?

  • Support your Horse Resistance (good roughage and balanced vitamins/mineral supplement)
  • Protect and improve intestinal flora for a strong immune system!
  • Provide a place where your horse can dry well
  • Do not brush too often if your horse is often wet (chance of damage to soft skin)

Does your horse already have skin problems due to the wet weather? Find suitable products in our webshop in the collection Sick and wound care!

Remember: This info blog is based on our (the people behind Equinics) personal experience, both in terms of the problems, products, therapies and gadgets that are discussed, but also in terms of our horse experience in general. 😃 We would like to emphasize that we think you should always ask your vet for advice if your horse needs help.😊
