Cavallo LEB - Long Ear Boots for Donkeys

A donkey’s hoof is shaped differently than a horse’s hoof—it has higher hoof balls, a thicker frog, and a longer, more oval shape. LEB (Long Ear Boots) are therefore not just a scaled-down version of a horse boot, but are designed from the ground up to fit the anatomy of a donkey’s hoof, in collaboration with donkey farriers, blacksmiths, and hoof care specialists.
They can be used for rehabilitation, comfort, and trail riding or driving. They can be worn in the pasture, in the stall, on the trailer, and for a variety of hoof problems—and, of course, as an alternative to shoes.
They are easy to put on, fit securely on the hoof without causing injury, provide good traction on the ground, are lightweight and extremely durable, and do not restrict the donkey’s natural hoof mechanics.
For example, you can use them for:
- donkeys that wear down their hooves (too) much
- hoof protection on all terrains for your barefoot donkey
- donkeys with thin soles or hooves that need extra protection
- donkeys that have or have had hoof abscesses, sole bruising, laminitis, nail punctures, or other hoof injuries
- comfort in cases of chronic pain or hoof sensitivity
- protection when the donkey has lost a shoe

The upper part of the Cavallo LEB is made of durable 1680 Denier nylon with waterproof seams, and the rear flap is molded to protect the hoof balls. There are drainage holes on the side that allow water to drain out (e.g., when the donkey steps in a puddle). The boots are therefore not completely waterproof, but in our experience, they can easily be used to protect hoof bandages—ask us if you’d like to hear about our experiences!
The boots fasten at the front with a sturdy, replaceable Velcro closure.

Carefully measure the hoof length and width, preferably right AFTER a fresh trim. Measure the hoof length all the way, INCLUDING the hoof balls—this is different from regular horse boots, where the hoof balls aren’t included in the measurement. The boots are designed to accommodate hoof growth between regular trims.

When you receive your boots
Remember that only unworn boots can be returned. To keep your boots clean and in good condition while trying them on, we suggest covering the hoof with thin plastic and then checking the fit on a clean, dry surface that won’t scratch the sole. If necessary, place a blanket or towel on the floor where the donkey can stand.
- Do not force the boot onto the donkey’s hoof in any way. If you have to force it on, it is too small.
- If the boot rotates independently of the donkey’s hoof, it is too large. A little movement is okay, because the hoof expands under weight-bearing and even more so during movement.
Always start by introducing the boots gently. It will feel different to the donkey and may cause it to move slightly differently for a while. Always build up gradually as needed. If necessary, apply a little zinc ointment or talcum powder spray to the hoof pads, especially when the boots are brand new.
Be aware that dirt or mud can get inside the boots, which may cause minor chafing or irritation. Therefore, always remember to check the donkey regularly. Always make sure that both the donkey’s hooves and the boots are clean and in good condition before putting them on.
